In Kim
Severson’s article, “The Best Chip? The First One Out of the Bag,” she uses
humor as well as a few anecdotes from other people to pull the reader in. Not
only is she describing why people love chips, but she explains the chips in a
unique and descriptive way, like “magical combination of potato, hot fat, and
salt.” Severson also includes two days of the year, July Fourth and Memorial
Day, that many people consume chips. This is a good selling point because it
shows what days you can advertise in order to get more people to buy chips.
Another strategy that the author uses is including facts that prove how many
people consume chips, and how often they do it. One example of this is how she
says that potato chip sales get over $6.3 billion each year, and about
two-thirds of American citizens have chips in their homes. She also doesn’t use
a very serious tone in her article, which I think is a good strategy for
something like chips. Chips are typically eaten at fun and leisurely events, so
they should be talked about in a fun way. Severson also includes a paragraph
about lard, which is what is used to make chips. Since this is an unhealthy
product, I think more people would appeal to something healthier.
For our
campaign, I think it will be a good idea to include days that many people eat
chips. If we remind people that there are days that give everyone excuses to
eat chips, then more people will buy them. I also think that including facts
will help us sell our chips. Facts always make things more reputable, because
if there is proof of something then people will be more likely to put faith
into our campaign. Another thing that our group should do like Severson, is
talk about the chips in a fun way. If we have a lighthearted campaign and
include humor, then people will see chips as something appealing and special.
Lastly, it is important that we make our chips as healthy as possible in our
campaign. Many people want to buy healthy food, so if our chips can somehow be
healthier than most other chips on the market, we will have a better chance of
selling them.
